Cafe at Disney Concert Hall

Designed while with Belzberg Architects. The Cafe space for the Walt Disney Concert Hall is situated just beyond the main lobby of the performance hall. Penetrating the perforated wood ceiling, a back-lit glass box contains all of the programmatic infrastructure of the cafe including food storage, preparation and check-out. The glass enclosure in the cafe highlights the condition and experience of being beyond. For the outer shell of this glass enclosure, staggered panels register a striated pattern of alternating sand-blasted and transparent bands that extend from one end of the space to the other. Muting light, color and movement from beyond the main dining space, this enclosure acts as a moving blind that appears to shift open and closed as people disappear beyond it, reappear fragmented for moments, and then emerge again as they began.
